Meet the New Jeep Patriot

Practically unchanged from the concept introduced at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the new Jeep Patriot made its global debut as a production vehicle, the newest entry-level SUV in Jeep’s lineup, at the 2006 New York International Automobile Show. The new Patriot arrives just three months after the debut at the 2006 NAIAS of another entry-level SUV from Jeep, the Compass. Both the Compass and the Patriot share a platform with the Dodge Caliber.

While the Compass looks more like a conventional SUV with a Jeep grille, the Patriot is more akin to the traditional Jeep design with elements of the original Jeep Cherokee evident. These include the square-ish lines, short overhangs and the trademark seven-slot Jeep grille. Also, the Patriot has already earned is ‘Trail Rated’ badge, unlike the Compass, because of its higher ground clearance and 4WD system.

The new Patriot will come with three available configurations: the standard front-wheel drive and two four-wheel drive systems (Freedom Drive I and Freedom Drive II). These drive systems make the Patriot a true off-road vehicle with its features such as added traction, continuously variable transmission with a low range capability, higher ground clearance, 17-inch all terrain tires and aluminum wheels, skid plates, tow hooks, fog lights, body sealing, etc.

Freedom II makes the Patriot at par with Jeep’s off-road capability prerequisites for water fording, traction, articulation, ground clearance and maneuverability. The Jeep Patriot will be powered by a 2.4 liter World Engine with variable valve timing and with an output of 172hp, and 165 lb.-ft. of torque. The Patriot will be arriving at dealerships later this year with an entry-level sticker price at under $16,000.

Jeep Doors

The story of the Jeep was conceptualized in the First World War of the 1940s. At that time, the US army was calling for a military vehicle that would transport soldiers in their various combat missions all over the globe. And as geographical attributes differ from every country, the vehicle was strictly required to be fast, resilient, and have an all-terrain quality for its travels. This is how the prototype of the Jeep came into being. And when the war ended, the Jeep should have entirely lost its purpose. But with its durability and tough-guy charm, it was later on resurrected as a commercial off-road vehicle. And that as they say is history, as the Jeep would then ingrain itself in the market as one of the most versatile vehicles in the automotive industry. The jeep is so well-adaptable and durable that not only is it used for warfare and daily driving, it has also participated in desert and mountain races, rock crawling competitions, obstacle course contests, and other various extreme sports events.

In line with its varying functions, the jeep also underwent a flurry of design innovations. And one of these numerous enhancements are the Jeep doors. Back in its strictly military days, the original Jeep did not even have doors. It was deemed an unnecessary device during wartime, as it slows the soldiers down in their movements in going in and out of the vehicle. However, as a means of everyday transport nowadays, Jeep doors are now considered as a necessity. Not only do these doors serve as a complementing aesthetic design to the vehicle, it also provides the safety that the car contents, including the people inside, would not spill out from the vehicle as it traverses the road. Moreover, these thermally-insulated Jeep doors also assist in providing privacy amongst its passengers, reducing distracting road noise, and clearing air ventilation within the confines of the vehicle.

And so, as Jeep doors invade the market, varying designs also flourished. Two kinds of Jeep doors are actually available in the market --- the full doors and the half doors, both of which the owner can happily experiment with, as manufacturers have designed Jeeps with easy-to-install removable doors. In terms of material, there are the available options of soft doors, glass, and hard steel doors. Again, this can be creatively mixed and matched to one’s preference, like a lower half steel doors being partnered with upper half soft doors. With regards to the Jeep door paint, an assortment of shades can be found in most autoparts market. Jeep doors can even be purchased unpainted and untextured if ever an owner wishes to have it uniquely designed and painted with an adventurous shade. Indeed, Jeep doors are built for power and rugged durability. But it doesn’t imply that these doors are indestructible devices, as the lifespan of every object primarily depends on the owner’s proper use and maintenance. Do not hesitate to replace a worn and damaged Jeep door to avoid inconveniences.
